Portable Fusion power
Dell Inspiron M102z

About the Dell Inspiron M102z - (Price $699.00)

This ultraportable notebook is a strong performer for low-end computing tasks, particularly given it’s about as light as a netbook.
For $699 the Dell Inspiron M102z is a very light, very functional ultraportable. This is mostly due to the AMD Fusion E-350 (1.6GHz) processor which brings with it the AMD Radeon HD 6310. Skipping the boring details, it provides low-end graphics rendering that would normally require a dedicated graphics card. Suffice it to say the M102z is great value for money for those that like portability but aren’t keen on netbooks.

What makes the versatility possible in such a small overall package is the AMD Fusion E-350 (1.6GHz) processor. It can handle low-end productivity applications with ease, and thanks to the integrated AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics card it can also handle graphically demanding tasks, for example streaming a HD movie onto a larger screen. The 4GB of RAM is definitely a healthy amount for a notebook that weighs 1.56kg, so multi-tasking will be a breeze.

The low weight is backed up a fairly slight frame; the M102z is 35mm thick, 205mm deep and 292mm wide. There’s no optical drive, a necessity given that the screen is only 11.6in which limits the availability of internal space. It does have a high resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, so it will work very well with videos and productivity applications.

While there are many upgrades on offer, they all focus on additional software and hardware that is mostly unnecessary to get full use out of the M102z. By all means use it to fill the gaps in your own available software and hardware, but otherwise stick with just the notebook.

There are two main variants of the M102z. For $599 the processor is downgraded to the AMD Fusion C-50 (1GHz), as a result the graphics solution is now the AMD Radeon HD 6250 and finally the RAM is now only 2GB. These specs are honestly a bit too close to AMD Fusion netbooks for our liking, so it’s probably best to go with the netbook in that instance. Then there’s a variant for $749 that leaves everything unchanged but adds a TV tuner. This is a well priced upgrade, so if watching and recording TV on the M102z appeals then it’s a good alternative to the main model.
